Today State Senator Carlo Leone (D-Stamford) and State Representative Jack Hennessy (D-Bridgeport) hosted the 3rd Annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day Ceremony at the State Capitol to honor the veterans of the Vietnam War and all others who have served in defense of our country.
“The Vietnam War was a turning point in our history, and it has shaped our nation as a result. Tragically, those returning home from Vietnam were never given the ‘Welcome Home’ message they deserved. Our nation has learned—painfully so—the repercussions of that mistake, and that is why today we honor our Vietnam veterans and all those currently serving abroad,” said Senator Leone.
“Years after the Vietnam War, our country is still healing and today’s event is a small part of that process. As an ex-Army Ranger, it is an honor to be working hard to give the Vietnam vets their just recognition,” Rep. Hennessy said. “As House Chair of the Veterans’ Committee I will continue to work hard for our veterans.”
State law designates March 30th of every year as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day, a special day to honor veterans who served in the Vietnam War. Welcome Home ceremonies are held annually at the Capitol in Hartford and elsewhere, as designated by the governor, to mark the day.
Today’s Capitol ceremony featured a presentation of the colors, singing of the national anthem, and remarks from multiple state and federal elected officials, including: Governor Dannel P. Malloy, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, Congressman Joe Courtney, Congressman Chris Murphy, and State Constitutional Officers.
Remarks were also made by Patricia Dumin, President of the CT Vietnam Veterans of America, and by Elliott Storm, a disabled Vietnam combat veteran, former Marine and author of These Scars Are Sacred. Mr. Storm has been decorated multiple times for his service to the nation, receiving two Purple Hearts, a Combat Action Ribbon, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.
