State officials made a major investment in fire safety and prevention today as the state Bond Commission approved $4.1 million in funding for renovations and additions to the New Haven Regional Fire School. Senate Majority Leader Martin M. Looney (D-New Haven) says that the funding will contribute greatly to the safety and security of towns throughout the New Haven area.
“I greatly appreciate the support of Gov. Rell, Mayor DeStefano and many others for these valuable enhancements to the firefighter training facilities in New Haven. By providing our firefighters with up-to-date training equipment and all the resources needed to prepare for their dangerous jobs, we offer a greater level of safety and security to the citizens of New Haven and towns throughout the region,” said Senator Looney.
The approved bonding funds will cover a number of improvements to the New Haven Regional Fire School, including the construction of a new burn building and a storage garage for vehicles and equipment. The site’s existing administration building will also receive improvements, including a new HV/AC central air system, fire alarm and improved handicap accessibility.
In addition to construction and renovation costs, the bonding will also cover the acquisition a number of props for specific firefighter training exercises, including confined space rescue, trench rescue, and propane fire simulation.
"I'd like to thank the State, Senator Looney and the other members of the New Haven delegation for helping to deliver bonding for this very important improvement project," said New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. "New Haven and numerous other fire and police departments receive essential training at this facility therefore this is a great investment for the entire region. When the improvements are completed, this facility will be better equipped to provide the comprehensive and modern training that our firefighters need to be safe and successful when responding to calls."
The New Haven Regional Fire School, located on Ella Grasso Blvd. in New Haven, is a regional training academy that provides training to fire departments in New Haven, Hamden, North Haven, West Haven, Woodbridge, Naugatuck Valley, East Haven, Bridgeport and various other departments.
