National Guard Association Recognizes Maynard For Support, Advocacy

The National Guard Association of Connecticut (NGACT) honored state Senator Andrew Maynard (D-Stonington), Senate chair of the General Assembly's Select Committee on Veterans' Affairs, with its Meritorious Service Award at its Annual Award Banquet this past Saturday, April 26, in Cromwell. The award is given annually to individuals, companies or organizations that support the NGACT.

"I'm honored to be recognized by the National Guard Association with this award," said Senator Maynard. "In this shortened legislative session, the Veterans' Committee has shepherded a number of positive reforms aimed at providing better services and opportunities for our active and retired military personnel and at acknowledging the contributions that veterans make to our society. I'm pleased that, as the Senate chair of the committee, I have the chance to be a part of these important and extremely worthwhile efforts."

As chair of the Veterans' Affairs Committee for the past two years, Senator Maynard has helped to lead the General Assembly in several initiatives designed to enhance benefits, services and opportunities for active and retired military personnel. He played a key role in the creation of a state Office of Military Affairs in 2007, which will aid in enhancing the quality of life of military personnel and their families.

Senator Maynard also worked to fast-track legislation that prohibits demonstrations within 100 yards of a military funeral, to offer unemployment benefits to military spouses forced to leave a job due to military reassignment, and to give all current and former National Guard members and honorably discharged servicemen and women unpaid leave on Veterans' Day, November 11.

The National Guard Association of Connecticut was founded in 1994 as a combined officer and enlisted organization for the purpose of representing active and retired members of the Connecticut National Guard.
