Maynard: Measure Provides Recognition For ‘Gold Star’ Families

Eliminates fee for state’s Gold Star Family license plate

The Connecticut Senate tonight--led by state Senator Andrew Maynard (D-Stonington), Senate chair of the General Assembly's Select Committee on Veterans' Affairs--gave final action unanimously by consent to legislation that eliminates the fee for Gold Star Family license plates.

"Gold Star families make the ultimate sacrifice. They suffer the loss of a beloved family member in service to our country," said Senator Maynard. "This is a small recognition that means so much to these families. I'm very glad that we could bring this legislation through the General Assembly this year and that we can give this acknowledgement of our respect and gratitude to these families." In 2007, the legislature authorized creation of the license plate for the immediate relatives of state residents killed in action while performing active military duty in the United States Armed Forces. They are available to spouses, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, children and grandparents of Connecticut residents killed in active duty.

The Department of Motor Vehicles charges a $10 fee--in addition to the normal registration fee--to cover the cost of making the plates. The legislation eliminates the $10 fee.

The state Department of Veterans' Affairs, Office of Policy & Management, Department of Motor Vehicles and Governor M. Jodi Rell all testified in favor of the legislation at a public hearing on February 28.

The measure--House Bill 5044--was previously approved unanimously in the state House of Representatives. It now moves to the governor for consideration.

The 2008 regular legislative session adjourns tomorrow, May 7.
