Senator Slossberg calls on the Senate and House leadership to expand the scope of a planned special session to include ethics reform. (May 9, 2008)
In a news briefing at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford this morning, state Senator Gayle Slossberg (D-Milford), Senate chair of the Government Administration & Elections (GAE) Committee, called on leadership of the General Assembly to expand the scope of a planned special session to include an ethics reform package.
"The taxpayers in the state of Connecticut deserve to know that corruption will not be tolerated at any level of government," said Senator Slossberg. "We were almost there, but at the end of the day we had a policy disagreement. That's what happens in the last days of session. But today is a new day, and it's time to move forward."
Senator Slossberg has asked Senate leadership to bring ethics reform up in special session. She has also reached out to her House co-chair, Representative Chris Caruso of Bridgeport, to begin discussions on how an agreement can be reached.
Senator Slossberg continued, "While I am disappointed that this was not taken care of during the regular session, I firmly believe that, with more time and without the end-of-session pressure, we can and will come to an agreement that all four legislative caucuses and the governor will support."
Senator Slossberg has pushed for comprehensive ethics reform-including a law to allow for the revocation of pensions from corrupt public officials-since her appointment as GAE chair last year.
The Senate passed a comprehensive package of ethics reforms twice during the regular legislative session. The measure--Senate Bill 333--died on the calendar of the House of Representatives.
