With the much-anticipated commuter train station moving full steam ahead, state Senator Gayle Slossberg (D-Milford) submitted testimony this week to the Commerce Committee in favor of legislation that would help pay for transit and pedestrian safety improvements in West Haven.
“With the city’s downtown district just two blocks from the site of the new station, West Haven is well-positioned to accomplish the mutual goals of improved transportation and renewed community development. HB 5074 and HB 5075 will help to move forward the city’s plans to create pedestrian improvements in the train station vicinity as well as develop a new transit-oriented plan to leverage the maximum value from the new train station,” Senator Slossberg stated in testimony she submitted to the committee.
Two bills came up for a public hearing before the joint Commerce Committee Tuesday: One would authorize up to $500,000 in bonding for pedestrian improvements near the new commuter rail station and the other would set aside up to $200,000 to fund a transit-oriented development study.
Plans include constructing new sidewalks, adding bus pull-offs and shelters, and installing new lighting to encourage walking and to improve safety for pedestrians. The city also plans to conduct a study of development options for the area around the train station, which is expected to be completed by the summer of 2013.
“Both of these projects will benefit the city of West Haven as well as residents throughout the state who will now enjoy easier access than ever before to the many noteworthy attractions this city has to offer. I ask the committee to support these modest projects, which are part of a broad plan to maximize state investment in the West Haven train station,” Senator Slossberg said in her testimony.
The proposed legislation, H.B. 5074 and H.B. 5075, is sponsored by Slossberg, state Senator Toni Harp (D-New Haven), and state Representatives Stephen Dargan, Paul Davis, and Louis Esposito, all Democrats representing parts of West Haven.
