Stillman Hails Imminent Release of Funds For St. Peter & Paul Polish Shelter

State Senator Andrea L. Stillman (D-New London) today hailed the likely, near-future release of state funding to the New London Homeless Hospitality Center, Inc., to underwrite improvements at the former St. Peter and Paul Polish National Church property in New London, for consolidation of its homeless shelter programs and administrative offices.

The funding, worth $500,000, will help finance a 25-bed emergency shelter, a separate, 15-bed facility for clients with acute medical and/or mental health conditions, and office space. The item is included on the agenda for next Friday’s meeting of the State Bond Commission; Senator Stillman said she expects it to be approved at that time.

“The services provided by this agency can literally be lifesaving for clients in crisis who need intervention, assistance, and shelter,” Senator Stillman said. “This funding will help the agency operate more efficiently from a centralized and consolidated headquarters and as a result, more efficiently serve the most vulnerable in our community.”

Senator Stillman said the General Assembly periodically provides funding for renovations in day care centers, elderly services facilities, homeless shelters like this one, and food distribution facilities statewide. But, she said, this grant allocation is unique in one very important aspect.

“I’m particularly pleased by the collaborative nature of this project, wherein the state’s grant will be matched—and slightly exceeded—by local fundraising efforts,” Senator Stillman said. “I think this is a sensible use of state funding, as seed money to leverage contributions from the private sector to the benefit of those who need a hand in our community and the community as a whole.”

Senator Stillman is serving her fourth term in the state Senate; she previously served six terms in the state House of Representatives. Senator Stillman is co-chair of the legislature’s Education Committee and a member of the Finance, Revenue, and Bonding Committee, the Public Health Committee, and the Transportation Committee.
