State Senator Andrea L. Stillman (D-Waterford) was joined by a dozen other members of the southeastern Connecticut legislative delegation in a letter to Governor Malloy requesting $500,000 to repel the prospect of closing the Naval Submarine Base New London. According to the letter the appropriation is necessary, “to provide the necessary financial support to organize a proactive effort.”
“The Submarine Base Realignment Coalition (BRAC) recently met with our Congressional representatives and various members of the community to restart this process,” the letter continues. “Galvanizing our forces here in Connecticut is crucial to a successful outcome.”
Senator Stillman played a critical role in the effort leading up to the 2005 decision to leave the submarine base open after it had been targeted for closure. In the years since, the state has worked diligently to complete major repairs and maintain the New London harbor.
“Recently, (New York) Governor Cuomo authorized the same amount so that New York can prepare as well,” the lawmakers’ letter continues. “The economic impact if our Base is closed is a loss of billions of dollars to our economy and countless numbers of lost jobs.”
“We decided the planning process that has worked in the past . . . is a formula we wish to replicate,” the lawmakers wrote to the governor. “The community leaders and volunteers are ready to begin to organize and create the necessary game plan for success.”
“In order for us to prepare we are requesting this assistance from the state,” the letter concludes. “Thank you for your consideration of this important matter.”
Co-signing the letter with Senator Stillman are: Senators Andrew Maynard and Edith Prague, and state Representatives Ed Jutila, Betsy Ritter, Kevin Ryan, Tom Reynolds, Elissa Wright, Steve Mikutel, Ted Moukawsher, Ernest Hewett, Melissa Riley, Diana Urban.
