Senate Democrats & Other Caucuses Begin Negotiations With Governor Rell’s Office on Ethics Reforms
Senate President Donald E. Williams, Jr. hopes bi-partisan effort will lead to real results
Senate President Donald E. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn) says today his office has entered negotiations with Gov. Rell's office, as well as representatives of the Speaker of the House, the Senate Minority Leader, and the House Minority Leader in order to reach a bi-partisan agreement on ethics reforms to be enacted this legislative session.
The negotiations are taking place this afternoon in one of Gov. Rell's staff offices and Senator Williams is confident that consensus can be reached on many of the proposed ethics reforms which have been offered by Gov. Rell and legislative leaders.
"There appears to be strong bi-partisan support this year for a number of important ethics reforms that will strengthen public trust in government," said Senator Williams. "The Senate Democrats proposed an aggressive ethics agenda in December and since then other elected officials have also made important contributions to the discussions over ethics reforms. The people of Connecticut are ready for action and I believe the negotiations will make that possible."
The Democrats' proposals include:
- Revoke pensions of corrupt officials.
- Require ethics training for legislators and municipal elected officials.
- Examine Extending restrictions to State Officials who lobby legislators.
- Create a permanent bi-partisan process for investigating alleged misconduct by legislators.
- Enact a code of conduct and a criminal penalty for elected officials who fail to report a bribe.
