Nearly Two Hundred Gather for Mansfield Senior Fair

MANSFIELD — State Senate President Pro Tempore Donald E. Williams Jr. (D-Brooklyn) and Senator Edith G. Prague (D-Columbia) welcomed almost 200 area senior citizens to their annual Senior Fair in Mansfield today at the town’s Community Center.

“I’m really happy with how the fair is going today,” said Senator Williams about halfway through the afternoon. “We’ve already had a good number of people stop by, and folks are getting their questions answered on everything from Social Security to home heating expenses and blood pressure readings.”

“This was a wonderful event. The vendors came with a lot of valuable information for the seniors, and everyone there learned a lot, socialized and had lunch. I hope we can do it again next year,” said Senator Prague.

The annual event draws area residents from Mansfield and many of the surrounding towns, and provides attendees with an opportunity to gather information about the many social services available to seniors.

“Many people have questions about possible changes in Social Security benefits and how changes in the cost of living might impact their payments. I’ve been happy to help today’s attendees answer these questions as they can have a big impact on one’s finances,” said Luis Perez of the Social Security Administration’s Willimantic office.

The fair also offers a number of on-site health screening services and the opportunity to speak with officials from various government agencies.

“I’m here today as part of a clinical rotation,” said Nina Lavoie, a student at the University of Connecticut School of Nursing as she took a quick break from seeing patients. “We’re taking blood pressure and blood sucrose readings today. All seniors should try to stay active and be aware of their cardiovascular health.”

“The fair has been very interesting. I’ve had a bone density scan done, and I’m about to get a flu shot here today as well,” said Kathy Mullen, a fair attendee from North Windham. “Everyone here today has been very helpful, and I hope more people will come take advantage of everything that’s offered here.”
