Senator Harris spoke of the need for consumers to educate themselves regarding personal finance, budgeting and savings, noting that homeowner and consumer debt has increased 3,500 percent—to a combined thirteen trillion dollars—in his lifetime, and that every American household currently has an average $112,000 in mortgage, credit card and automobile loan debt.
