Senate Majority Leader Duff Hails Star, Inc.’s Selection for Nonprofit Grant Program

STAR, Inc., slated to receive more than $780,000 for critical improvements and vehicles

Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff (D-Norwalk) today hailed the news that STAR, Inc., was selected as a recipient of a Nonprofit Grant Award from the State of Connecticut. STAR will receive a grant of $783,656 to cover improvement and renovation costs at their Norwalk center and for the purchase of vehicles that will be used to transport individuals with developmental disabilities to their jobs, homes, medical appointments and activities throughout Fairfield County.

Created by Governor Malloy and the General Assembly in 2013, the program has helped hundreds of nonprofit organizations across Connecticut with a wide variety of capital improvement projects. Today’s allocations are the fifth round of grants since the launch of the Nonprofit Grant Award program.

“Every day, STAR is making an incredible and positive impact on the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities,” said Senator Duff. “This critical state funding will ensure that STAR can continue its mission of providing unparalleled services.”

“STAR is very grateful for this grant award” said Katie Banzhaf, Executive Director of STAR. “This grant makes it possible for STAR to deliver the quality of care and safety our clients require. We appreciate Senator Duff’s efforts on behalf of STAR, and his advocacy on behalf of people with special needs. This funding will truly make a difference in the lives of our clients.”

“By supporting capital purchases that enhance service delivery, efficiency and effectiveness and addressing health, safety and accessibility issues, this grant program assists nonprofit agencies in focusing on what they do best—getting services to those who need them most,” Governor Dannel P. Malloy said in an earlier statement today.

The Nonprofit Grant Award program is administered by the Connecticut Office of Policy and Management (OPM).
