Moore: Youth “Food Leaders” Awarded at Bridgeport Farm

Senator Marilyn Moore (D-Bridgeport) toured two of Green Village Initiative (GVI)’s community gardens in Bridgeport today and met with a group of GVI youth leaders who are championing food justice and sustainable urban horticulture in their community.

Senator Moore awarded the youth crew, who attend local high schools, with official state citations for being “food leaders” in their community. They will be presented to the teens in the presence of their families during GVI’s official end-of-summer celebration on August 12th.

Participating youth were: Jean Laurena, Pattrick Okon, Justin Sullivan, Llamar Ethan Antoine, Craig Wright, Maia Mneimne, Rebecca Mpoyi, Tyannah Torres, Delisha Ramsay, Lamar Pharr and Kahlis Parker.

Senator Moore urges the Bridgeport community to support food equity and access by volunteering at one of the local community gardens or by stopping by the farm stand at 1469 Reservoir Avenue to purchase fresh, affordable, community-grown produce. It runs every Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. (except August 31 and September 28) and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until October 12. They accept SNAP, WIC, senior benefits, Bridgeport Bucks, and SNAP purchases are doubled.

GVI also hosts great workshops right at the farm where you can learn about agriculture, healthy eating, cooking, and more.
