Senator Osten Welcomes $2 Million for Ledyard Habitat for Humanity Development

State Senator Cathy Osten (D-Sprague) today welcomed the announcement that the Town of Ledyard will receive $2 million to fund infrastructure for the Colby Drive affordable housing development, the largest Habitat for Humanity development in Connecticut.

Located off Colonel Ledyard Highway between the town green and Ledyard High School, the Colby Drive development will produce 38 units, including two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes, single-family units, and duplexes, serving families in Ledyard and the surrounding region.

“This $2 million grant will help bring 38 affordable homes to the center of Ledyard, within walking distance of stores, the library, and jobs,” Senator Osten said. “This project by Habitat for Humanity will provide families in southeastern Connecticut with affordable housing and a path to homeownership. I was proud to support this project, and I will keep fighting to make sure eastern Connecticut gets its fair share of investment from the state.”

“Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut is honored to bring 38 much-needed affordable homeownership opportunities to Ledyard with this funding,” said Sarah Lufler, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut. “Our new neighborhood will consist of two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes built alongside a newly constructed road connecting Colby Drive and Col. Ledyard Highway. The first phase will include drainage upgrades, connecting to public sewer and utilities, and the new road.

“We’d like to thank Senator Osten for following and supporting our work, which allows Habitat to bring people together to build a more vibrant community.”

The funds are being released through the Connecticut Department of Housing’s Community Development Block Grant Small Cities program.

“These housing grants go a long way to improving neighborhoods so that we can make our communities more attractive and encourage continued growth for the benefit of all our residents,” Governor Ned Lamont said. “I thank Connecticut’s Congressional delegation for prioritizing the CDBG Small Cities program, which provides necessary support for our smaller communities.”

The grant funds the first phase of the Colby Drive development, which will extend utilities to the site, made possible by the recent completion of Ledyard’s multi-use path. The project is being developed by Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut.
