Senators Looney and Duff: Trump Abandons Rail Tunnel & CT Workers While Imposing $20 Billion Foreign Deal

Today, Senate President Pro Tempore Martin Looney (D-New Haven) and Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff (D-Norwalk) released the following statement after reports that the Trump administration has blocked a new rail tunnel between New York and New Jersey that is vital to Connecticut commuters and businesses, canceled more than $50 million in Connecticut energy projects, and at the same time provided a $20 billion bailout to Argentina to benefit one of Donald Trump’s billionaire donors:

“Donald Trump is purposefully harming the people of Connecticut, and he does it with relish to punish a blue state. By blocking construction of the desperately needed rail tunnel beneath the Hudson River, Trump is threatening the lifeline that tens of thousands of Connecticut commuters and businesses depend on every day. He has also cancelled more than $50 million in Connecticut green energy projects, costing jobs, raising energy prices, and weakening our power grid. Yet somehow, he had no problem rushing through a $20 billion bailout for Argentina to help one of his billionaire donors.

“Connecticut Republicans have been complicit every step of the way. Instead of standing up for our state’s commuters, workers, and manufacturers, they stay silent while Trump attacks the very projects that create jobs and lower costs here at home. They would rather protect Trump and his billionaire donors than defend Connecticut’s economy.

“The priorities for Trump and Connecticut Republicans are clear: sell out Connecticut families, workers, and commuters while doing favors for the wealthy and well-connected.”
