NEW HAVEN—State Senator Gary Winfield (D-New Haven) is pleased to announce that the State Bond Commission has approved funding to be allocated to Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven Inc., for the revitalization of a blighted property located at 111 Carmel Street.
“Access to quality housing has a great impact on New Haven’s families and communities,” said Sen. Winfield. “This loan will allow Neighborhood Housing Services to aid the city in addressing blighted sites, thereby creating a lasting impact on the deserving families located in the Dixwell Avenue community.”
“NHS provides a terrific service for New Haven residents—and the city at large—because home ownership and owner occupancy are keys to both family and neighborhood stability,” said Mayor Toni N. Harp. “I’m grateful to Senator Winfield and members of the legislative delegation for their advocacy of this project and to members of the bond commission for their approval of this funding.”
“This funding will help to change both the perception and image of Carmel Street,” said Neighborhood Housing Services Executive Director James Paley. “With New Haven’s low apartment vacancy rate, our organization provides quality apartments that are not typically found in other sections of the community. This property will have top quality amenities so that our tenants are motivated to stay long term.”
The Carmel Street site was among 11 projects chosen by Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Department of Housing Commissioner Evonne Klein back in January, to be rehabilitated for the expansion of affordable housing opportunities across the state.
Since its founding in 1979, the Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven has been revitalizing target neighborhoods by rehabilitating houses of homeowners who have needed technical and financial assistance.
The $305,000 loan allocated for this project will help to transform a longstanding eyesore into a new and affordable housing unit for deserving New Haven families.
