Senator Larson Condemns Violent White Nationalist Protestors in Charlottesville

Senator Tim Larson (D-East Hartford) released the following statement regarding the violent clashes between neo-Nazis, white nationalists and counter-protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia over the weekend:

“Racism, white supremacy, neo-Nazism, and the other hateful views touted in Charlottesville this weekend have no place in this country and we must stand united in confronting and defeating this type of terrorism. The First Amendment grants us the right to many things, but never to commit such horrible acts of violence. My prayers go out to the victims, their families, and to the entire city of Charlottesville. As we move forward to heal our communities, we must continue to spread our message of love, tolerance, and acceptance of Americans of all colors and religions.”

Statement from Senate President Pro Tempore Martin M. Looney Regarding CCM and COST

Statement from Senate President Pro Tempore Martin M. Looney Regarding CCM and COST

Senate President Martin M. Looney (D-New Haven) today released the following statement responding to comments made by the leaders of the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities (CCM) and the Connecticut Organization of Small Towns (COST):

“For the chief lobbyists of CCM and COST to stand up publicly and declare that they have not and are not asking for towns to be held harmless when it comes to municipal aid is misleading and does not accurately represent the positions of the mayors and first selectmen from whom we have heard.

“It has been extraordinarily difficult to put together a final budget largely because of this issue of municipal aid. If the top lobbyists for the two largest municipal advocacy organizations and their mayors and first selectmen are willing to stand side-by-side with the Governor as he renews his call to pass his budget and the hundreds of millions of dollars in cuts to municipal aid, then it should not be difficult reaching a final budget agreement that slashes aid to cities and towns.”

Sen. Flexer, Rep. Haddad Laud New Bus Line From Hartford to Storrs; Urge Further Expansion to Willimantic

State Senator Mae Flexer (D-Danielson) and state Representative Gregg Haddad (D-Mansfield) today praised the announced expansion of CTtransit bus service from Hartford to new stops in Storrs, but they also called on state officials to create a transit loop through Willimantic, including service to Eastern Connecticut State University.

“The expansion of CTtransit bus service onto the UConn campus is wonderful news, but this bus service should also be expanded into Willimantic, which is the largest town in the region and home to two colleges. I’m sure the students and staff at those colleges and the residents of Willimantic would appreciate having the same the opportunity to travel quickly and easily into Manchester, Hartford and beyond,” said Sen. Flexer who is vice-chair of the Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee. “It’s just another five miles, and extending CTtransit bus service into Willimantic would allow people to connect with other transportation services throughout eastern Connecticut.”

“I’m very pleased that transit service is being extended to Storrs. Students, university staff and Mansfield residents need reliable public transportation in the corridor between Mansfield and Hartford,” said Rep. Haddad, who is co-chair of the legislature’s Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee. “I look forward to advocating for further extending the service to Willimantic. We need service to Eastern, Quinnebaug and Main Street, Willimantic.”

Governor Dannel P. Malloy and state Department of Transportation Commissioner James P. Redeker announced today that beginning August 13, the existing CTtransit bus route between Hartford and Tolland is expanding further east and will now include new stops in Storrs.

The route extension will—for the first time ever—provide UConn students, faculty and staff the ability to connect to the main UConn campus in Storrs, the downtown Hartford campus and UConn Health in Farmington via public transit, in addition to a wide variety of other destinations in between.

UConn students are eligible to ride the bus at no charge simply by showing their student ID and a UPass obtained through the university, the costs of which are included in their university fees.

The extended bus route will run hourly and include the following stops:

  • Nash-Zimmer Transportation Center, Storrs Center (Connections to UConn Transportation for travel around campus and for connections to Willimantic)
  • UConn campus Whitney Hall
  • Route 195 at Route 44 (Four Corners)
  • Tolland park and ride lot
  • Buckland Hills Mall
  • Manchester—Buckland park and ride (Bus Stops A & B)
  • Downtown Hartford at Central Row (a short walk to UConn Hartford campus and connections to other local and express bus services)
  • Union Station, Hartford
  • CTfastrak Sigourney Street station (transfer available via CTfastrak Route 121 to UConn Health in Farmington)

Commuters on the extended route will have the ability to connect to the CTfastrak bus network in Central Connecticut, as well as the upcoming Hartford Line commuter rail system, which will launch in May 2018 and provide more frequent train service between New Haven, Hartford and Springfield.

The bus route’s hours of operations will be:

  • Weekdays: 5:45 a.m. to midnight
  • Saturdays: 6:30 a.m. to midnight
  • Sundays: 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Duff Calls on Faith Community to Provide Sanctuary for Jung “Sarah” Courville

Norwalk, CT—Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff (D-Norwalk) today released the following statement in support of Jung “Sarah” Courville a member of the Norwalk community ordered deported by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement despite annual meetings with the agency and no criminal record:

“Sarah Courville is a good person, long-time Norwalk resident and pillar of the community who embodies the American dream. We should be encouraging people like Mrs. Courville not punishing them. What strategic, economic, public safety or national security purpose does it serve to rip her away from her husband and children and break up her family? Our country needs a rational national immigration policy. Deporting Mrs. Courville does not make any sense. Today, I am calling on the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement to allow Mrs. Courville to remain in the country in order to care for her children. Until then, I am counting on the local faith community to do the right thing and provide sanctuary for Mrs. Courville.”

A support vigil is schedule for tonight at 6 p.m. Monday at Norwalk’s St. Jerome Catholic Church, where Mrs. Courville and her family are parishioners.
