OLD SAYBROOK – Today, State Senators Martha Marx (D-New London) and Norm Needleman (D-Essex) highlighted the release of $2 million in state bond funding by the State Bond Commission on May 29 that will support the development of new amenities at the Acton Public Library in Old Saybrook.

“Old Saybrook punches above its weight, and these new resources at the Acton Public Library will support the town further, supporting residents’ needs for decades to come,” said Sen. Marx. “It’s meaningful that these changes will support what residents need from the library, offering new amenities to aid the town. I can’t wait for the groundbreaking.”

“This work is going to provide new resources for local children and teens, helping further the library’s educational benefits and helping foster a love of learning in future generations,” said Sen. Needleman. “I’m excited that this investment will go a long way to further the state’s support of Old Saybrook.”

The $2 million supporting the library will help renovations at the library with a total cost of $4.9 million. New features at the library will include remodeling for a new teen space, complete with technological enhancements, as well as a new office and work area in the existing Children’s Room. The project will further reconfigure staff spaces and streamline library circulation, helping it continue to provide better services to local residents for years to come.

The library was last renovated in 1999; upgrades will also include seating and gathering expansions, new meeting rooms and additional outdoor programming.

Senator Osten Welcomes $2 Million for Ledyard Habitat for Humanity Development

State Senator Cathy Osten (D-Sprague) today welcomed the announcement that the Town of Ledyard will receive $2 million to fund infrastructure for the Colby Drive affordable housing development, the largest Habitat for Humanity development in Connecticut.

Located off Colonel Ledyard Highway between the town green and Ledyard High School, the Colby Drive development will produce 38 units, including two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes, single-family units, and duplexes, serving families in Ledyard and the surrounding region.

“This $2 million grant will help bring 38 affordable homes to the center of Ledyard, within walking distance of stores, the library, and jobs,” Senator Osten said. “This project by Habitat for Humanity will provide families in southeastern Connecticut with affordable housing and a path to homeownership. I was proud to support this project, and I will keep fighting to make sure eastern Connecticut gets its fair share of investment from the state.”

“Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut is honored to bring 38 much-needed affordable homeownership opportunities to Ledyard with this funding,” said Sarah Lufler, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut. “Our new neighborhood will consist of two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes built alongside a newly constructed road connecting Colby Drive and Col. Ledyard Highway. The first phase will include drainage upgrades, connecting to public sewer and utilities, and the new road.

“We’d like to thank Senator Osten for following and supporting our work, which allows Habitat to bring people together to build a more vibrant community.”

The funds are being released through the Connecticut Department of Housing’s Community Development Block Grant Small Cities program.

“These housing grants go a long way to improving neighborhoods so that we can make our communities more attractive and encourage continued growth for the benefit of all our residents,” Governor Ned Lamont said. “I thank Connecticut’s Congressional delegation for prioritizing the CDBG Small Cities program, which provides necessary support for our smaller communities.”

The grant funds the first phase of the Colby Drive development, which will extend utilities to the site, made possible by the recent completion of Ledyard’s multi-use path. The project is being developed by Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut.

Senator Hochadel Welcomes $722,800 to Protect 18.5 Acres of Open Space in Cheshire

Senator Jan Hochadel (D-Meriden) today welcomed a $722,800 state grant to permanently protect 18.5 acres of open space in Cheshire, preserving working farmland and opening new public recreational access along the Quinnipiac River.

The grant will support the Cheshire Land Trust’s acquisition of a property on East Johnson Avenue along the eastern bank of the Quinnipiac River. The land sits within an Aquifer Protection Area and contains prime and important farmland soils. The existing agricultural use will continue. Once protected, the property will open public access for hiking, fishing, and kayaking, with ADA-accessible features to welcome visitors of all backgrounds and ability levels. The project has the support of the Town of Cheshire, the Regional Water Authority, and the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments.

“This grant keeps working farmland along the Quinnipiac River in agricultural production while opening the riverfront to public hiking, fishing, and kayaking,” Senator Hochadel said. “A new trail, fishing spots, and a boat and kayak launch will give Cheshire residents access to the river, with ADA-accessible features to make sure everyone can enjoy it. This is the kind of project that makes a lasting difference for a community, and I am grateful the state is making it possible.”

“Open space provides benefits to residents across Connecticut and makes our state a great place to live,” Governor Lamont said. “These community assets provide free recreational opportunities and connect our residents to all the health benefits that come from spending time outdoors.”

The grant was awarded through the Open Space and Watershed Land Acquisition Grant Program, administered by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The award is part of a broader $9.4 million announcement today covering 14 properties across 15 communities statewide.

Senator Lesser on the Passing of Rabbi Lazowski

Senator Lesser on the Passing of Rabbi Lazowski

“Rabbi Lazowski survived the Nazi occupation of Poland, carrying his mother’s wish that he live to tell the world what really happened. He spent the rest of his life answering that charge. He wrote sixteen books, spoke to untold thousands around the world, and helped make Holocaust and genocide education the law in Connecticut so that students who never met him would still learn what he survived. I am a better person for having known him, and I know I am not alone in that. Rabbi Lazowski’s life was a moral lesson for our time. My deepest condolences to Ruth, to Alan, and to the whole Lazowski family.”
